Daily Thought for: 18th September
PETER RESTORED
John 20. 1-10

When the Lord died it must have seemed to Peter that the end had indeed come. With Him hopes and aspirations were buried too. The cross had come as a great shock, but a greater shock was to follow—resurrection! On the morning of the third day the Lord Jesus rose from the dead. Appearing first to Mary He asked her to carry a message to the disciples, and to Peter. He would see them shortly in Galilee. The special mention for Peter was lest he imagined himself no longer fit to be called a disciple due to his failure. On hearing Mary’s stirring words both Peter and John ran to the sepulchre. John got there first. The leaden boots of guilt slowed Peter, but on arrival, as John waits without, he goes straight into the tomb. What he sees—the linen clothes lying undisturbed and the napkin folded—compels him to believe the Lord had risen. With the Lord absent, the empty tomb held no attraction, so Peter went home. The Person is much more important than the place! Later that day the Lord appeared to Peter personally—what happened has never been disclosed.

Subsequently, Peter was encouraged to meet the Lord in the upper room with the other disciples, but his restoration was not complete until the meeting with the Lord in Galilee. There, ‘lovest thou me more than these?’ was the searching challenge. Peter had claimed earlier that while others may forsake the Lord in His hour of need he certainly would not. He was guilty of despising others and exalting self. Now he professes his love for the Lord and no longer uses others as a comparison. The Lord is interested in what we think, not in what we suspect others may think. Three times the Lord pursues him on this question of love—perhaps to equate with the three denials—and three times Peter responds, ending with ‘Lord, thou knowest all things, thou knowest that I love thee’. By his denials Peter missed the opportunity of identifying with the Lord in His death, and forfeited blessings that would undoubtedly have been his. By confession fellowship is restored and the way back to service is opened up. Only those who have been persuaded of their own weaknesses and have been humbled before the Lord, are equipped to take the message of salvation and comfort to others.
